Senates: Bicameralism in the Contemporary World (Parliaments and Legislatures Series)
Published in Paperback by Ohio State Univ Pr (Txt) (May, 1999)
Authors: Samuel Charles Patterson and Anthony Mughan
Average review score:

A True Masterpiece
Senates is one of the best books that I have ever read about upper chambers around the world. As I am myself employed by the Senate of Canada, I feel that the book truly reflects not only the history and workings of that particular chamber but also of the other bicameralist systems in the countries which the book examines. The issue of Senate reform is a touchy issue, particularly in Canada, but the author of the section on the Canadian Senate offers viable and excellent options for potential models of Senate reform and his theories certainly deserve further investigation- not only by Senators and their colleagues but by the electorate of Canada as well. Any one who is interested in international politics should definitely add this book to their library and I give it five stars.

Shade of His Hand
Published in Paperback by Discovery House Pub (December, 1991)
Author: Oswald Chambers
Average review score:

Telling It Like It Is
Too many times christian writers try to make us believe that if we are good little boys and girls God will pave a way for us with rose petals. Not so Oswald Chambers in this book. He lets us know that life has ups and plunging downs; horrors as well as ecstacies. The trick for the christian is to develope a day by day realistic relationship with God and to depend on him every step of the way to not only take you through these times, but to lift you up as you go. Oswald does this by an analysis of the book of Ecclasiastes. Few are brave enough to tackle this but this author does it in a very down to earth, nuts and bolts fashion. It gave me a springboard from which to go in my mind and begin to think in a new way about the things that have happened in my life. Through the whole book the author himself shines through as a real three dimensional person and not just a preacher or teacher isulated behind a pulpit or sitting somewhere writing a book. He is right in the thick of things, hot sweaty body, next to hot sweaty body. This gives his words authenticity.

The Shaping Forces in Music: An Inquiry into the Nature of Harmony, Melody, Counterpoint, Form (The Dover Series of Study Editions, Chamber Music, Orchestral Works, operas In Full Score)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1977)
Author: Ernst Toch
Average review score:

Great for aspiring composers
A composer friend of mine recommended this book to me as a good introduction to composition. After reading it, I agree. Have you ever wondered why you can write something that obeys all the rules of classical music theory but has no life to it? Toch takes a good look at the practice of composition through the ages and abstracts a set of principles - the shaping forces in music - that give a composition structure and vitality. The things that I found really interesting about these principles were how universally they apply across all periods and styles of music, and how willing the 'classical' composers like Mozart and Beethoven were to break the rules of classical theory in pursuit of a larger goal.

If you have any interest in the principles of music composition, this is a great book. My only comment is that points illustrated by quotations (which is most of them) are not always clear unless you can play or 'hear' the music - easy for Mozart, not so easy for Brahms, Debussy etc. Having a piano handy would help with this. Another solution would be to read this book in a music library and listen to the relevant works as they come up - in fact I hope to do this sometime myself.

Overall highly recommended for students of music - it's a breath of fresh air after all the traditional dogma.

Enhanced with figures, tables, summary "boxes", and more
In Sharing Nature's Interest: Ecological Footprints As An Indicator Of Sustainability, Nicky Chambers, Craig Simmons, and Mathis Wackernagel deftly collaborate to present the reader with a compendium of information on assessing ecology on a regional and a global basis through a process called 'ecological footprinting'. The informative text is enhanced with figures, tables, summary "boxes", a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a primer on thermodynamics, conversion tables, glossary, and an index. Sharing Nature's Interest is an important and highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and professional environmental studies reference collections and reading lists.

The Sherlockian Star Chamber
Published in Hardcover by Battered Silicon Dispatch Box (1996)
Authors: Steve Clarkson and Paul Churchell
Average review score:

A clever, clever fiend
Mr. Clarkson's deeply twisted soul is instantly evident from the jacket caricatures, obviously done from life. Some of the worst Canonical puns on record are between the covers of this little masterpiece, laid in lightly among perfectly innocuous questions. Cartoons by Paul Churchill execute the coupe de grace. These two zanies are great personal friends and obviously deserve each other. You deserve the giggles you'll get reading this gem of low cunning and felicitous tongue fu. Highly recommended.

Showdown at Apple Hill

Author: John W. Chambers

The Apple Hill Mysteries
This story begins in Dover Valley, where Billy and Jenny have just moved in. As their friends tell about the Quarry gang, they become more aware of the real place they live. As they soon learn, the Apple Tree School House for retarded children isn't what it seems. The school actually had ties to the gang. After the visit, Billy and Jenny try to find out who killed the gang leader and where all the money was that the gang had stolen. Billy and Jenny get clues from the people of Dover Valley and use them to solve the mystery. They learn about how members of the Quarry gang were killed, how Kurt Heineken was arrested, and how the leader of the gang escaped. After many years, he was found dead and the search for his assailant began. After investigating and old graveyard, many of the mysteries in the plot came to life. The epic tale of murder and money will keep any reader happy.
I liked this book because of the descriptive words, compelling plot, and good foreshadowing. This book stacked up to other mysteries very well and can be a good alternative from The Goosebumps series. An interesting plot and neat organization add to this already amazing book. Details and realism make the reader truly become the character. Also, I would recommend this book for all middle school and high school reading levels and for anyone liking for a thrilling mystery.

Slavonic Dances, op. 46 in Full Score, Antonin Dvorak
A great score to Dvorak's great masterpiece. The book is very easy to read and lies flat on a desk or music stand. Though it's the smaller sized score (8 1/2in x 11in), it's still very ideal for study or enjoyment. It's low price is a must for the starving music student. I highly reccommend it for professionals and listeners alike.

So Send I You Workmen of God/Recognizing and Answering God's Call to Service
Published in Paperback by Discovery House Pub (June, 1993)
Authors: Oswald Chambers and Cswald Chambers
Average review score:

A must read for those considering full time service.
Wisdom is timeless. So Send I You\Workmen of God falls into the catagory of a timeless work with regards to serving God. Every paragraph is a reread. When Chambers refers to our need to reach the lost he speaks of it as a matter of Spiritual Honor. To keep the message of Jesus Christ to ourselves is an unhonorable thing. The shining star of the book though is the chapter Vision, Valley, and Verity. Any one who has been in ministry very long will appreciate this as an oasis in the midst of dry place. You owe it to yourself and to those within your sphere of influence to consume this book.

Social Policy and Social Programs: A Method for the Practical Public Policy Analyst
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Pub Co (November, 1992)
Author: Donald E. Chambers
Average review score:

Policy, Bill, Program Analysis made too easy.
Want to know how to critically look at ANY policy or program? Take a look at this book. Each chapter gives a very detailed description of how policies and programs should be written so that the best possible results can be achieved. There are twelve chapters that cover analyzing social backgrounds, understanding historical significance of a policy or program, Judiciary contexts, style, goals and objectives, benefits and services, eligibility, service-delivery systems and methods of financing. Each chapter is detailed and jam packed with information but is still easy to follow. Full of great examples of how to pick and pull a policy apart and find all the possible lope holes. The last chapter gives an example of an actual policy analysis using each part of the chapters.

Highly recommend! This book is for anyone and everyone analyzing written policies!!!!

This book was the guideline for a policy analysis I had to do. I would have never gotten through the analysis of the bill if it hadn't been for this book!
